Until Steve and his plane are finally located. It turns out Steve's alive, left in a state of suspended animation in the ice where he crashed it.
Years after he's found and living in the world, it comes to light that there's a way in which time travel can be accomplished. It's not widely known or used. Eventually, though, he has the chance to use it to travel back and he does.
