Hey, Mr H? I hate to have to ask but I got an audition for that Neptune gig you were talking about? Anyway, Mr Rackham? He says I need something a bit more conservative than, well, this.
[She lets the camera pan over her mirror - reflecting her in her golden crop top and tight pants.]
Man, I hate asking for shit without being able to pay but can I borrow a dress or something? Just until I get some money together and I'll pay it off. Or working for you - I'll sing or wait tables or whatever? I mean, if it's okay?
[Yes, he knows, he communicated that quite clearly to Jack in advance--if the audition was going to include Irving then Dinah needed to be sent to him first for proper apparel.]
It would be my pleasure. Come to the shop as soon as you can, I'll put you in something appropriate. I trust your word, and you can certainly pay it back. I'll set aside a couple of other dresses for you as well, so that if you get the job you'll have three to rotate out on different days.
That's just fine. I'll see you soon and have something ready.
[And he does. When Dinah shows up, he holds up a shimmering gown.] It's more champagne than gold, but I thought it might still suit you. It's not too lavishly pricey, and it should be acceptable for the audition. What do you think?
[Dinah’s mouth drops open. That gorgeous gown is not what she had been expecting.]
Really? For me? Are you sure?
[She touches the fabric carefully.]
I think it’s the most beautiful dress I’ve ever seen. Is it like… like, old enough? That guy didn’t seem too impressed with the whole showing skin thing? Actually come to that, I’m gonna have to hide my weave too. Shit - am I gonna have to take it out?
I'm sure, and don't worry. The most important thing is the long hem, which this has. It's not see-through, and it isn't showing cleavage, either. Just the arms, and that should be acceptable enough.
Your hair--[He doesn't know what a 'weave' is but he thinks she means her hair.]--is fine. You look beautiful. Style it as tidy and elegant as you can. I can help if you need. And tell him you're happy to wait tables or tend the bar when you're not performing. If you do, I'll get you something a bit less flashy for when you're not performing.
I’ll do anything he wants. Hell, I could work his security for him easily.
[Give Dinah her due - she is a grafter. She’s not afraid of hard work in the slightest.]
Thank you, Mr H. Thanks for looking after me. You’re a good man, you know? You’ve been real good to me. Next party you throw, I’ll sing all night for you!
Be less generous, [Huaisang advises her, fond and amused.] You've got to look out for yourself and know your own value. I'm happy to help you out because I know you keep your word. But I'm still paying you for any work or performances you do for me.
[Self esteem is something Dinah's still working on. Granted, it might be easier without certain people here, but it's definitely a work in progress. She smiles sheepishly and ducks into a changing room with the dress. It takes her a few minutes but when she comes out, her grin is huge. The dress fits her like a glove, highlighting her petite physique and complimenting her skin tone.]
I feel like a million bucks, Mr H!
[She spins round, pulling her hair over one shoulder. Her tattoos are mostly covered by the dress.]
He'll like this, right? With a bit of red lipstick? I can do like, a classy lounge singer, yeah?
[Beaming as she re-emerges, Huaisang looks her over with appreciation, pleased that his choice suits--and fits--her so well.]
I think classy lounge singer would be perfect. [He lacks most of the context there, but he feels like his best guess for whatever classy + lounge constitutes is probably the right mood.] You look fantastic. I'm certain that Rackham and Irving will be impressed.
When you get the job, let me know the details and I'll arrange the other dresses accordingly.

[She's imagining all hoop skirts and corsets - hopefully not what Huaisang has in mind because Dinah's not exactly keen on the idea.]
I'll come by now, if it's okay? I just wanna get sorted and like, get my shit together in this place for a change.
